Hyde Away Inn & Restaurant — Operations

Located on 3.3 acres surrounded by hills and streams with a private pond, the Hyde Away Inn is just west of the busy commercial intersection of Routes 100 and 17. While there is little commercial development in Fayston, which adds to the charm of the property, Route 17 is a busy corridor leading to ski areas Mad River Glen (3 mi.) and Sugarbush (Mt. Ellen, 1 mi. and Lincoln Peak, 5 mi.) and to the Long Trail.

The business consists of ten rooms for lodging, the restaurant and tavern — all of which are currently open daily, year round. The Hyde Away is a popular spot for locals and tourists with the current owners in operation for over 18 years.

The Business

Our year-round business has increased steadily over the past 10 years. We have created a niche offering good, hearty food, comfortable lodging, and fine spirits — all affordably priced. Our market is targeted at adults, age 30 to 45, with and without children. The business is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

The restaurant, tavern and lodge work together, each operation supporting the others. The Hyde Away is one of the few establishments in the Valley that offers this combination of complimentary operations. Year-round, the tavern and restaurant attract a regular crowd of locals and visitors who return year after year for the comfortable, friendly atmosphere, friendly staff, affordable pricing and consistently good food.

In the winter season, the Tavern has become an extremely popular après ski and night spot for ski visitors from Boston and New York. In the summer and fall, we have become a gathering spot for wedding parties and have become increasingly popular with bicyclers and hikers.

The business continues to grow, though at this point, the winter season provides the majority of revenues. The balance between local patrons and tourists helps to maintain the business year-round.

The Hyde Away Staff

The friendly staff at the Hyde Away is one of its greatest assets. From front-of-the-house operations to kitchen, cleaning and innkeeping staff, Hyde Away employees work hard to ensure that guests — local patrons and tourists alike — have an enjoyable experience. Many of the staff have extensive experience in the hospitality industry and turnover is relatively low. Some employees have been at the Hyde Away for a long time. One has worked with us part-time for all 18 years. Other long-term tenures range from 8 to 11 years.

Patrons enjoy seeing friendly, familiar faces from one year to the next. It is, in part, the reason the Hyde Away has developed such a loyal following with locals and tourists who return to the Mad River Valley from season to season, year after year.
